Anticipating the Next Book

2. If you are in a position of power, you are happy.

Response: Many examples from the books we have read either contradict or prove this statement. Something that proves this statement is, in Lord of the Flies we saw that as Jack began to gain followers of his own the power went to his head and he was, in a sense, happy. I think that just because you are in a position of power, it doesn't mean that you are necessarily happy. Someone could easily be unhappy while in a position of power.

5. Women are more compassionate and less violent than men.

Response: Men are thought to be more violent than women in today's world, but women are capable of doing most of the same things men are. In ancient times, the men left their villages to hunt and gather food, and women stayed inside and cooked or wove cloth, but just because things were like this then, doesn't mean that they are incapable of violence. From my perspective, women and men can be equally violent.

Hits and Misses

This year in English, I have struggled through many writing projects, but I have also done well in some. Some assignments that I think I have done well on were the conjoined project with World History and the literary analysis on Lord of the Flies. I feel that my best writing was shown in these pieces of writing. For the project we completed with our World History class, I think that the reason my paper was thorough and well-written, was because I was interested in the topic that I was writing about and was enjoying the research of this topic.

Although I have done well in some writing assignments, I have struggled to complete some to the best of my ability. For example, I think that my skill was lacking in the personal narrative and most of the blog posts. My focus was on other subjects at the time of the personal narrative, and I think that affected my ability to write a well thought out essay. For the blog posts my main struggle has been keeping up with my submissions and completing the two paragraph requirement. Overall, I feel that I could have done better in all of my writing assignments and hope to try harder to put forth my best effort next year.

Book Update 4/10

Now that we are reading Purple Hibiscus by Cimamanda Ngozi Adichie, I have come up with what I think is a good way to gain all of the needed information and annotate thoroughly. I have ben reading each chapter first, and then later going back to annotate. I do this so that I can already have an idea of what's happening so I can make good notes. This does take a little bit more time than annotating while reading, but it's worth it in the end.

I haven't really faced very many challenges throughout the book so far, but I have found it difficult to keep up with the reading assignments. I am a relatively slow reader, so with all of these fast-paced assignments I've had a hard time getting finished on time. I have tried my best to improve my reading speed, and I think I am finally becoming a better reader overall.

Prompt 4/10

What advice would you give younger kids about
middle or high school?

If I had to give some advice to a younger student, then I would say to always put forth your best effort and try not to procrastinate. Just get all of your work done before and then do something fun. Don't wait until the night before to study, study the week before every night to keep the information fresh in your mind. Put yourself in a place where there are no distractions. For example, don't be near your gaming console while you're doing work, you may be tempted to grab your controller and play.

Throughout middle school, be sure to be focused in class, sometimes you can be distracted and miss crucial information. If you are missing class for some reason, either call a friend or e-mail your teacher to find out what you went over in class. If needed, the next day during a free period, go to see them and talk about any material you don't understand. Most importantly, stay organized and keep your work in places you can find it in.
